Steve Madden isn’t the first luggage brand that comes to mind when you’re looking to elevate your travel game, but it might be time for that to change. I just picked up the Steve Madden Softside Spinner 3-Piece Luggage Set in Legends Turquoise, and I’ve had a chance to put it through the wringer for a weeklong cruise and several domestic flights. You’ll notice right off the bat that it has style.
But does it have substance? I had a few questions about durability, packing capacity, and general travel-friendliness.
Build & Materials
I have to admit that out of the package, the Steve Madden set receives a lot of style points. Legends Turquoise is a stunning color, the soft exterior has an elegant sheen, and the complete set has an upscale vibe without being overly flashy. Of course, looks alone are meaningless if it can’t take a beating from airport security or survive a surprise run down a cobblestone street in Rome. Fortunately, in real-world usage the set is durable enough.
The exterior is a heavy-duty polyester twill that’s easy to wipe clean and resists light scuffs and dirt. That said, the lighter colors (turquoise, purple, etc) do show dirt more easily than black, brown, or gray would. A baby wipe or moist towelette removes most stains, but don’t expect it to be completely pristine forever.
The hard corners are reinforced with a lighter material for extra rigidity and durability, which also creates a large (but good-looking) wheelbase. The large suitcase in particular felt very stable when fully packed, which was a pleasant surprise. I was worried at first that the low center of gravity would create a pulling imbalance, but all three bags (especially the checked) are quite stable and don’t want to tip forward or lean against walls during transit. Honorable mention must be given to the underseat tote, which in my opinion is extremely useful. It has ample compartments, a laptop sleeve, and even wheels for mobility (though just 2 rather than 4). Despite that, it fit everything I needed for 16 days of cruising including formalwear, a bulky suitcase tarp, and extra shoes without any problem.
Note: The carry-on and checked bags both have a zippered expansion function, which is handy for those inevitable overpacking moments. I used it on the way home to stuff in a few gifts and mementos with zero zipper strain.
Rolling & Handling
Spinner wheels are a huge win for this set. The large and medium bags both have 360-degree spinner wheels, which float along with very little resistance on smooth airport flooring. It was a true pleasure to roll the checked bag with both hands free, and even when full I could easily tug it along with a single finger.
Both the carry-on and checked bag also have telescoping handles with a push-button lock. The handle itself isn’t as strong as the best travel brands I’ve tested (just below Travelpro-tier), but it’s adequate and not prone to excessive wobbling or flex.
The underseat bag: I would have loved it if the designer used four spinner wheels instead of just two. It’s no problem to tilt and drag it along the ground, but it feels a bit antiquated compared to the buttery glide of the other two bags.
