What Is the American Tourister Soundbox Spinner?

American Tourister is a Samsonite sub-brand known for its durable travel bags and competitive prices. While their luggage is typically quite utilitarian looking, the Soundbox line steps it up a notch.

Featuring an award-winning design, the Soundbox collection sports a stylish moulded pattern with circular ridges earning it the Red Dot Design Award. Available in three sizes (55cm, 67cm, and 77cm), these hard-shell spinners have attracted attention for their appearance and high levels of customer satisfaction.

Design and Appearance

If we’re being honest, we can’t think of a better place to start this review than with how the Soundbox Spinner looks.

The hypnotic moulded pattern has a cool, artistic quality that reminds us of retro-style boomboxes or vintage records. Colourful variations of the patterned luggage catch your eye from across the carousel, and the bright colour options minimise mix-ups at baggage claim. ReviewedSuitcases

American Tourister released the Soundbox collection in coral, yellow, blue, green, navy, and black. Not every size option is available in every colour, but American Tourister offers enough variety that we’re sure you’ll find a colour that fits your personality. WanderlustChloe

Soundbox colours come in brighter, riskier options like coral and aqua blue, as well as muted black and navy varieties. If you frequently travel with checked luggage or are worried about excess handling on budget airlines, keep in mind that lighter-coloured bags will show scuffs more easily. You may want to opt for black or navy to avoid the wear and tear that shows quickly on lighter-colours. Along Dusty Roads

Build Material and Durability

Before we talk about what the Soundbox Spinner is made of, we should mention what it’s not.

Cheaper bags tend to be constructed from ABS plastic, which is more prone to crack and breakage. American Tourister opted for polypropylene to construct the Soundbox Spinner. Why does this matter? Let’s dive into it.

Polypropylene luggage is much more resistant to cracks and dents, while also being lightweight. American Tourister chose polypropylene for the suitcase as it’s cheaper than an alternative material: polycarbonate. Packing MyDragonFly

Combined with its matte finish, the suitcase’s ridged pattern also helps hide scratches and scuffs. Due to its flexible but resilient polypropylene shell, the Soundbox Spinner is both incredibly flexible and shatter-resistant. How does that stack up to cheaper bags? The ABS plastic bags will likely crack and/or break far easier than your Soundbox. Backpacker’s Flight Luggage Guide

This doesn’t mean that you’ll never have any problems. In our experience, polypropylene can be scratched fairly easily. That being said, we have friends who use theirs daily and are still going strong at over one and a half to two years. Overall, we think the Soundbox has excellent durability. The luggage can withstand strong impacts and is unlikely to break under regular use. ReviewedSuitcases

Put simply, if the airlines or airport handlers throw your suitcase around (and they will), it’s going to hold up better than cheaper alternatives. The inside of your suitcase will be just fine.

Size and Luggage Capacity

Soundbox Spinner luggage is pretty big — and we mean that in the best way possible.

Our medium (67cm) model measured 46.5cm in length x 29cm width x 67cm in height (including wheels). The total volume comes in at between 71.5 and 81 litres, owing to its expandability feature. Packing MyDragonFly

The extra-large model weighs only 4.2kg and boasts 97 litres of packing capacity. Not only can you stuff a lot into these bad boys, but thanks to its hollowspinner wheels, they aren’t overly heavy. WanderlustChloe

If we had to sum up the capacity section of this review in one sentence: American Tourister Soundbox luggage gives you plenty of bang for your buck. Every size option offers generous amounts of storage, with plenty of space to pack everything you need (and then some). Its hard-shell exterior gives it a larger capacity than you’ll find with most soft-shell luggage, and all three size options feature an expandable design, giving you extra packing space when you need it. Backpacker’s Flight Luggage Guide

How big should you get? If you travel alone frequently, the medium-sized Soundbox suitcase is ideal. However, for couples and families travelling together, we recommend looking at the large size.

Interior Organisation

Let’s dig a little deeper into what you can do with all that space inside your new Soundbox Spinner.

The luggage features a cross ribbon structure throughout the main body of the suitcase. This effectively means your clothes and packed items won’t move around or get wrinkled during transport. The lid features a large zipped compartment, while there is also a zipped line divider attached inside that reaches from the lid to the base. Packing MyDragonFly

Small items won’t go walkabout thanks to the side pocket that comes with divided walls. Overall, it’s well designed, although not perfect. The upper compartment uses a zip while the lower storage compartment uses ribbons to secure your belongings. AS traveler

If you and your significant other or other family members plan on sharing a suitcase, the zippered divider is a lifesaver. You can separate your items from everyone else’s, which is helpful once you’ve accumulated laundry during your travels.

Easy Rolling: Spinner Wheels

American Tourister describes the Soundbox Spinner suitcase as “Muse-inspired…” and we couldn’t agree more. If we had to choose a favourite feature of the Soundbox Spinner, it’d be these babies.

Soundbox Spinner cases come equipped with 360-degree spinner wheels. These wheels can roll in any direction, allowing you to smoothly glide wherever you need to go. TouristSecrets

Whether you’re pushing, pulling, or spinning the suitcase on the spot, these spinner wheels make the Soundbox easier to manoeuvre than most other luggage. The suitcase doesn’t flip over when you push too hard on one side, and the side handle is great for navigating stairs or snatching your suitcase out of someone else’s hands. ReviewedSuitcases

Featuring high-quality wheels and a sturdy telescopic rod, your Soundbox Spinner is also incredibly easy on your wrists. Additionally, American Tourister designed the telescopic handle to extend and contract, accommodating different user heights. Backpacker’s Flight Luggage Guide

That being said, the wheels are significantly closer to the ground than many of our other tested luggage. As such, you’ll have to take care on particularly uneven terrain. AS traveler

Security: Integrated Lock

American Tourister may be known for durability, but their luggage also takes your security concerns seriously.

The Soundbox Spinner boasts its own built-in lock, and is TSA-approved for travel. In our tests, we found that the zipper smoothly opened and closed with ease, even when over-packed. Although thin, the fabric appeared sturdy and wouldn’t easily tear or strain. Backpacker’s Flight

That TSA-approved sticker isn’t just there for show either. American Tourister’s built-in combination lock allows you to secure your Soundbox Spinner without violating TSA regulations. If someone needs to inspect your luggage, they’ll be able to do so without destroying your lock or suitcase. TouristSecrets

American Tourister makes it easy to set your own TSA-approved combination (which we recommend changing for every flight), and it works like a charm. If you’ll be travelling internationally and flying through U.S. airports, then you’ll be happy the Soundbox is TSA-approved.

Warranty

Each and every American Tourister Soundbox Spinner model comes with a limited 3-year global warranty. As one of Samsonite’s many umbrella brands, American Tourister has great reliability when it comes to accessing authorised repair centres all over the world.

Combined with their impressive after-sales service network, you can buy a Soundbox suitcase with confidence.

Soundbox Spinner Suitcase: Who Is It For?

Whether you’re looking for budget-friendly luggage or spinning suitcases that’ll turn heads, the American Tourister Soundbox is our pick if your travel priorities include:

  • Large storage capacity
  • Smooth rolling
  • Internal organisation features
  • Unique, award-winning style
  • A suitcase that balances price with performance
  • Budget-conscious travellers that don’t mind checking a bag

American Tourister makes some fantastic luggage. If you want a lightweight cabin suitcase that can double as carry-on, check out our American Tourister Jetstream reviews. For backpackers and travellers that prefer soft-shell luggage, take a look at our American Tourister Orbit series review. Luggage Guide

We think the Soundbox suitcase is perfect for:

  • Frequent vacationers that are willing to check a bag
  • Couple and families that will be sharing one large suitcase while travelling
  • Any stylish traveller who wants their luggage to stand out from the crowd
  • Style-savvy jet-setters and young adults who’ll love the bright colour options

Soundbox isn’t ideal for those seeking a carry-on sized suitcase. While the brand does offer a 55cm cabin sized option, it’s heavy for a carry-on suitcase at 3.5kg. Due to this, we believe other brands offer lighter weight alternatives for travel seekers that require cabin-only luggage. Luggage Guide
