Away Carry-On Review: Lightweight, Durable, and Easy to Pack

Whenever I have shopped online for quality luggage over the past several years, it seemed like the Away Carry-On kept coming up. It would show up on Wirecutter lists, packing videos by influencers, and all over the airport. So I finally took the plunge and ordered one… specifically the Classic Away Carry-On with the 100% polycarbonate shell.

After taking it on a few short trips and rolling it across carpeted hotel lobbies, bumpy sidewalks, and inside airplane overhead bins, I have one thing to say: the Away Carry-On genuinely feels thoughtfully engineered in ways that a lot of bags simply do not. In this review, I want to go over my first-hand experience with it, some of the features that really make a difference, what I liked and didn’t like, and if it truly lives up to its reputation as one of the best modern carry-ons.

Before we dive in, here is the luggage I tested.

Build & Materials

The first thing I realized upon opening up the Away Carry-On is that it looks clean and minimalist. The outer shell is 100% polycarbonate but it does not feel shiny and cheap like a lot of budget-priced hardside luggage shells. Instead, it has a somewhat understated matte finish that gives off a more premium and rugged vibe.

It also feels light in the hand, yet solid enough that you could press on the panels without fear of warping them. It measures at 14.4” L x 9” W x 21.7” H (including the wheels), so it fits comfortably within the carry-on size restrictions of most major airlines.

For grins, I poked and prodded the front panel intentionally, pressed it, twisted it, and even lightly sat on it, to see how it would hold up. It flexes slightly (polycarbonate shells should do this), but not in a way that feels like it is weak. In fact, it gives you confidence that the shell will take an impact without cracking.

Handles & Trolley

The Away Carry-On includes:

  • Quick-release trolley handle with two height stops
  • Side carry handle
  • Underside grab handle for lifting into an overhead bin

That grab handle on the underside is one thing I had no idea I needed until I used it. It makes putting it into an overhead bin controlled in a way that just plopping it in randomly does not.

TSA Lock

The lock is simple. The TSA-approved lock feels substantial and snaps the zipper pullers in with a nice click.

Interior & Packing Experience

Opening the Away Carry-On, you are presented with the brand’s signature layout: a side for clothes and a side for more structured items with a mesh divider between.

The star of the show is the patented compression pad system and it works. Most other brands throw in a pair of straps and call it a day. But Away’s system is more refined, more supportive, and truly makes use of all that cubic space.

Here is what I was able to pack on a recent 4-day work trip:

  • 4 shirts
  • 2 pairs of pants
  • 1 blazer
  • Gym clothes
  • Underwear and socks
  • Toiletries
  • Tech pouch
  • Foldable sneakers

With the compression pad cinched down, all of the items stayed in place even after jogging through an airport.

There is also a laundry bag tucked into the lining. It is compact, but also surprisingly useful when you want to keep dirty clothes contained and separate on your last day.

Rolling & Handling

If I had to pick a single best feature, it is the wheels.

The way they roll is incredible. Even when the case is packed full, they glide effortlessly. I tested them over:

  • Carpeted areas in airports
  • Tile
  • Pavement
  • Moving walkways
  • In and out of hotel rooms

They never rattled, scraped, or vibrated. Instead, they stayed super smooth, stable, and quieter than I expected.

I have seen this sentiment from multiple customers:

Rolls smoother and effortlessly.

The wheels glide easily over any type of surface.

Top quality… rolls easily on the four wheels.

These are wheel qualities and performance you typically only see at the high end from brands like Briggs & Riley or the Travelpro Platinum.

Real-World Feedback

Here is a quick summary of the biggest things real verified owners consistently love:

Smooth-gliding wheels

A lot say this is the smoothest rolling bag they have ever had.

Compression pad fits more than you would think

A number of reviewers specifically mention getting 4–5 days of clothes comfortably in.

Lightweight but tough shell

Shell resists scratches, pressure points, and bumps.

Maneuverability in packed airports is great

Travelers who commute often are especially pleased with this.

Lifetime warranty is solid

Away’s warranty covers shell cracks, wheel failures, handle defects, zippers, and more.

I thought this feedback was particularly insightful, so I want to highlight a few direct comments from real users:

  • “I’ve taken it on two short trips and I’m getting ready to take it overseas. Extremely pleased with the purchase.”
  • “Perfect carry on. Rolls smoother and effortlessly.”
  • “Best carry-on I’ve ever had!”
  • “Packed for a 5 day international work trip and still had room for souvenirs.”

This sentiment seems consistent regardless of the color or when the bag was purchased.
