Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside Luggage Review: Durable, Stylish, and Built to Last

Samsonite has been the benchmark by which all other hardside luggage is measured for a long time now, and the Winfield 2 spinner series is no exception. I just bought the 28″ checked model in Brushed Anthracite for a two-week international trip, and I’ve got some strong opinions after four airports, European cobblestones, and customs inspections. Spoiler alert: this suitcase is a beast.

Build & Materials

The Winfield 2 features a 100% polycarbonate shell, which is relatively light yet also extremely resistant to impact. From baggage carousel drop tests to being stuffed in the back of cars, this suitcase took it all in stride, and came away looking perfectly fine (save for a few minor scuffs). It may look (and feel) luxurious, but this piece is clearly designed to take a beating. The brushed pattern has the added benefit of camouflaging scratches and marks that may occur through normal travel wear and tear. I found this particularly useful after enduring a too-close-for-comfort viewing of my suitcase rolling down the luggage carousel, at my vacation’s end.

Four multidirectional spinner wheels roll freely over airport tiles, concrete, and even short sections of gravel. They made virtually no dragging sound while in use. The telescoping handle also locked smoothly into several set positions, making this suitcase a pleasure to pull for passengers of various heights. And the side-mounted TSA-approved locks are a welcome bonus.

Size & Specs

A quick look at the 28″ version’s numbers:

  • Packing Dimensions: 28.0” x 19.75” x 12.5”
  • Overall Dimensions: 31.0” x 20.0” x 12.75”
  • Weight: 11.5 lbs

Dimensions aside, what I like most is how much packing space this suitcase affords you with the 1.5″ built-in expansion. I packed clothes, three pairs of shoes, toiletry bag, an extra jacket, and even souvenirs/gifts for family members with space to spare.

The Winfield 2 comes in a three-piece (20”, 24”, 28”) collection as well, which can be a nice option if you’re looking to upgrade your travel set in one fell swoop.

Interior & Packing

Flip open the clamshell and you’ll find the interior is completely lined, and features two identically-sized compartments. One side has cross straps to help keep your clothes in place, while the other side features a full zippered divider with mesh pockets. It’s a relatively simple design, but functionally it works well.

The compression straps help keep your items nice and compact in the suitcase, and my clothes were still relatively wrinkle-free after a long-haul flight. A small but appreciated feature was the built-in zippered pouch in the zippered divider, which was great for chargers, toiletries, or other small valuables that you might want to separate from your clothes.

Handling & Mobility

All I can say is hats off to Samsonite for re-engineering their spinner wheels. These new ones have reduced friction by design, making the rolling effortless. At close to 50 pounds, I was able to nudge this suitcase with two fingers across smooth flooring. In areas where there were uneven sections like sidewalks or escalators, I tilted it onto two wheels and was able to wheel it no problem.

The retractable handle is rigid and doesn’t feel wobbly when extended to its fullest point. Being 6’2”, I also like that the set positions for height are multiple. The side and top carry handles are also both padded, and made it easy for me to load it in the trunk of a car, and into a train compartment.

Real-World Feedback

After reading through dozens of verified customer reviews, I’ve compiled the majority opinions from other travelers like you into the following.

What People Love:

  • Sturdy Yet Lightweight: Many customers were shocked at how light the Winfield 2 felt as a hardside case. One person wrote about filling it to capacity for a three-week trip to Asia and still being underweight.
  • Looks Great: The brushed metal finish has come in a variety of color options (purple, burgundy, deep blue). It has been popular, with at least one user stating people thought they were flying first-class based on the suitcase alone.
  • Rolls Smoothly: The wheels are also a frequent positive, with users raving about how easily they pivot and glide across airport carpet and rougher ground.
  • Durability: A handful of folks have reported using the suitcase for international flights, cruises, and even train travel with no major damage.

Some Common Gripes:

  • Scratches Easily: While the brushed finish helps hide it, some people have reported seeing visible scratches after minimal use.
  • Handle Wobble: A few reviews have mentioned a slight wobble with the telescoping handle, though it doesn’t seem to affect usage.
  • TSA Lock Confusion: Some have mentioned being surprised to receive the bags with a pre-set lock code that wasn’t 000. (Tip: try 000 first, then change/reset)
  • Interior Pockets Should Be Improved: The divider pockets are fine, but a few users wanted even more organization, like shoe bags or a wet pouch.

Not Ideal For

Samsonite’s Winfield 2 is an excellent suitcase, but it may not be the best choice if:

  • You want the softside flexibility to overstuff the suitcase with last-minute additions
  • Ultra-lightweight budget airlines that charge for every pound and dimension
  • You want a large number of interior compartments for obsessive packers
  • Expandable softside bags and modular packing cube systems may be a better option in those cases.

Final Verdict

The Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside Spinner 28 Inch comes as close to a perfect suitcase as possible. It isn’t the least expensive, but you get what you pay for here, and you’re paying for quality. After surviving a long international flight and many miles of ground travel with zero issues, this suitcase is a no-brainer for my travel rotation from now on.

Is it perfect? Of course not. It will accumulate scratches. The handle may feel like it’s wobbling a bit at times. But if you want a suitcase that looks good, travels well, and can take abuse from baggage handling without batting an eye, then I highly recommend this one.
