With plenty of luggage testing under my belt, specifically with checked luggage on lengthy trips, organization and quality are usually what I find myself looking for the most. Thule has long been known for their heavy-duty workhorse of luggage. However, they step it up with this checked spinner featuring thoughtful internal features while still maintaining that tough build.

Initial Impressions: Sleek, Minimalist, and Built to Last

When I first picked up the Subterra checked spinner, what really stuck out to me was how non-flashy it is.

The design of this suitcase is simple and screams functional. The design takes on a matte finish and feels substantial without being overweight. This luggage is built to go places and not just to look good on your hotel lobby floor.

The first thing you notice when holding it is that it doesn’t feel overly rigid. While still sturdy, it has a nice give to it that I found comfortable.

Build Quality: Built Like a Tank

Thule is no stranger to the outdoors and travel gear. With years of experience under their belt, you know they know what they’re doing when it comes to building tough products.

This luggage definitely lives up to the hype. It feels strong and well-made. zippers are solid and stitching is neat and tidy. The handle even features a unique v-tubing design that adds extra stability when rolling the luggage over bumpy surfaces.

One of the reasons I trust this bag to last is because Thule tests their products more than most companies. Their testing includes simulation of sun exposure, rapid temperature changes, abrasion, humidity, etc. While some of this may be an exaggeration and marketing, the final product you are left with is built to withstand abuse.

In my opinion, this is one you can check again and again without stressing about it getting damaged.

Luggage Interior & Packing: Where the Subterra Shines

If you’ve ever owned a suitcase that seemed like it was missing something, I am here to tell you that this is not that suitcase.

The standout feature of the Subterra is without a doubt the removable compression panel.

This boarding pass holder and compression panel work wonders when packing. I found myself able to fit way more into my suitcase without it feeling overly stuffed.

Also helpful is the foldable divider. This may seem like a small feature, but it was great at keeping things separated. I used it to divide shoes from my clothes which helped to keep everything cleaner.

My last favorite feature is the top-loading organizer pocket. The best part? You can access it from both the inside and outside of the luggage. I used this for things like jackets and pajamas, allowing me to easily grab them without digging through my suitcase.

They even include the traditional compression straps. Having both allows you to pack in the method most comfortable for you. Use the straps with the compression panel or by themselves.

Thule really impressed me with the interior of this luggage. It is obvious a lot of thought went into the design.

Rolling Performance: Solid, But Could Be Improved

How luggage rolls will make or break your experience, especially when traveling through large airports.

The Subterra checked spinner includes quiet rolling spinner wheels. These perform admirably in most situations. When on slick surfaces like the airport floor, the luggage rolls super smooth with hardly any effort on your part.

Thankfully, the telescoping handle is comfortable as well. It doesn’t wiggle or bounce around too much.

As great as the rolling performance is, there is one downside that others have mentioned and I noticed as well.

The wheel base on this luggage is a tad narrow. When unevenly packed, you may feel it leaning more to one side. Again, this isn’t a dealbreaker by any means. Just something to keep in mind if you tend to overpack.

Trip Summary

All in all, after a week filled with travel, the Subterra checked spinner did everything I could’ve hoped for.

Not only was packing easy and efficient, but everything stayed put where I intended it to. Thanks to the compression panel I was able to fit a lot more than I normally would in a suitcase of this size.

While at the airport the suitcase rolled great and managed beautifully through crowded areas. I was also impressed after my flight on how it held up to being checked. No noticeable scuffs or damage.

What I will say is that the slightly unstable feeling when it’s fully packed is something I will keep in mind for the future. Again, it didn’t really affect my experience but some may find that annoying.

Compared to other luggage in its class, the Subterra truly shines when it comes to how it’s organized.

Sure there are suitcases out there with compression straps. However, it is rare to find a luggage with a removable compression panel that works as well as this one. If maximizing your packing space is important to you, this is a huge benefit.

If you find yourself someone who always overpacks or likes to maximize stability, you may find yourself wanting a wider wheel base. While it rolls great, there are other suitcases with much wider wheelbases that may feel more stable when loaded.
