Travel Select Amsterdam Luggage Set Review

The Travel Select Amsterdam 4-Piece Luggage Set is one of those surprising steals that will actually outperform your expectations. Rugged, well-organized, and stylish enough to not stand out like a sore thumb on the baggage carousel, this softside luggage set is far more travel warrior than it has any right to be. I recently took it on an international, multi-leg trip and was impressed beyond its low price point.

What’s Included in the Set?

The Amsterdam set includes four pieces:

  • 29” Large Upright (expandable to 12” deep; 9.5 lbs)
  • 25” Medium Upright (expandable to 11” deep; 8.5 lbs)
  • 21” Carry-On Upright (expandable to 10” deep; 7.7 lbs)
  • Travel Tote (15” x 11” x 6”; 2 lbs)

It also comes with four packing cubes which I really like to keep things organized within each bag. All three uprights have in-line skate wheels, expandable capacity, and internal tie-down straps.

Build & Materials

TThis is sturdy, not-your-average-budget-retail outlet luggage. The 1200D 2-tone polyester fabric with a PVC backing was impressively hardy. On my travels, this material shrugged off a bumpy boat transfer as well as some brutal baggage handling in airports without scuffing or tearing.

The in-line skate wheels aren’t the spinner style, but they are reinforced with corner protectors and roll super smoothly on the majority of surfaces. They’re best for airports and hotel lobbies than cobblestones streets, though.

“I can’t emphasize enough how durable these are. They survived two months traveling in Africa and are bright colors, surprisingly easy to spot across a crowded and chaotic airport.”

Maneuverability & Handles

Rolling on two wheels (versus newer spinner style bags), the Amsterdam bags are less prone to tipping and, as such, more maneuverable for some travelers on slopes or rougher terrain. The retractable push-button handle is easy to use and locks securely in place. The top and side carry handles were comfortable and durable. The bottom grip handle was a welcome addition when lifting the luggage into cars or overhead compartments.

Their handles are very comfortable. Very light case and an excellent bargain.

Interior Storage & Expandability

Each of the upright bags is fully lined and organized with large zipper pockets, dual shoe pockets, and compression straps. The overall layout is smart and intuitive. I like how the expandable zippers can give you up to 25% more space when needed. This is a huge plus for the inevitable return trip when you’ve accumulated souvenirs or bulky jackets.

I can pack two pairs of shoes away from my clothing, as well as two belts. The extra bag flap looks well sewn in.

The travel tote has a top zip main compartment with an adjustable shoulder strap and a piggyback strap which slides up and over the upright handle. This is great for electronics, snacks, or a change of clothes.

Real-World Use & Durability

This luggage set has been put through its paces in some pretty extreme travel situations as evidenced by user reviews. One reviewer had even run a truck over the large upright and it still survived:

This hardy piece had been run over with my work truck and suffered a huge gash on its side. It just made another trip to Denver, the wheel wobbles a little but it’s still trucking!

Another user took their entire set to Bora Bora and beyond:

I took my set to Bora Bora and they have been through some extreme travel situations. They fit in overhead bins and carry on. Island hopper planes that held together with duct tape, were thrown off the boat to the dock and dragged through sand and lava in Tahiti before being piled into a rental car for the drive to our condo. Each bag has seen not less than 100 flights.

Design & Color Options

The Travel Select Amsterdam luggage set comes in five color choices: red, navy, orange, burgundy, and gray. The two-tone fabric and modest logo branding are surprisingly attractive and surprisingly tasteful for the price. My personal favorite is the orange as it’s bright enough to spot on a crowded carousel, but not garish.

Final Verdict

The Travel Select Amsterdam 4-Piece Luggage Set is an underdog that seriously deserves some recognition. For less than $100, you get four durable and well-designed bags that perform very well under stress. It lacks the refined finishing touches or high-end wheels of its luxury counterparts, but it more than makes up for it with reliability, spaciousness, and bang-for-your-buck value.

If you’re an occasional traveler or someone getting ready for a big trip and don’t want to spend hundreds, this is a great choice. It’s also an excellent option for younger travelers, students, or anyone who prefers good function over flashy branding.
