TUMI instantly evokes words like “luxury” and “durability.” I finally had the chance to put their Alpha 3 International Expandable Carry-On through its paces over several domestic and international trips, and it was mostly worth the hype.

Made of TUMI’s signature FXT ballistic nylon, the Alpha 3 is built to take a beating. Abrasion-resistant, spill-proof, airport-scuff-resistant, the nylon shell will give most other bags a run for their money.

The telescoping handle is rock-solid with no annoying flex or clanking when pulled out. It locks securely at multiple height settings and is easy to adjust with one hand, though with solid aluminum construction, it’s not as light as some other brands. The rubberized grip is comfortable and non-slip for long pulls in sprawling terminals.

The grab handles on top, side and bottom make lifting into the overhead bins easy, even when full and heavy.
