The Kenneth Cole Reaction Renegade luggage set offers the perfect combination of style, function, and affordability. I tested out the carry-on and medium checked bag on numerous flights, a cruise, and a series of weeklong vacations, and I have a lot to love and a few complaints to report before you make your purchase.

Build & Materials

Made of a composite material of ABS and polycarbonate, the Renegade line is not full polycarbonate like the higher-end Samsonite or Briggs & Riley hard shells, but it is more than up to the task of withstanding the rigors of regular travel wear and tear. Hotel door jams, carry-on carts, and luggage carousel overstuffing by multiple passengers never scratched or dented the shell beyond a few minor scuff marks, even after repeated check-ins with airlines and bulging car trunk rides.

Smooth molded corner guards absorb some of the impact in common breakage spots, and while the exterior finish (rose gold, in my case) may not look particularly luxe, it has a shiny finish without the cheap-plastic appearance that other nylon-covered shells have. Options range from tried-and-true black and silver to fun patterned prints in peony, champagne, and sage.

Winning feature: The 2-inch expansion zipper. I made good use of this on my cruise vacation, and it gave me the extra wiggle room I needed without completely distorting the shape of the bag.

The telescopic handle extends to a maximum length of 41 inches and locks securely in place, leaving no wobble or risk of pinched fingers. Rubberized, padded top and side handles offer a more comfortable grip. Even the bottom grab handle was useful when trying to align my bag in a car trunk or hotel room closet.

Real-World Feedback

After roughly eight flights, two cruises, and four hotel rotations, the 24” and 20” I own still work well. The only gripe is the wheels have some noticeable drag after one year on the carry-on, but they still glide relatively easily. Zippers never snagged, and the spiral-style plastic has held up well so far.
