Rockland London Luggage Review: Lightweight, Colorful, and Affordable

Rockland Luggage really surprised me with this hard-shell spinner. At such a low price point, the brand cannot compete with top-tier brands like Samsonite or Away. But after testing the London Carry-On and reading user reviews, Rockland delivers on the basics for occasional travelers who don’t want a carry-on that’s excessively heavy or bulky.

Here’s what I liked and didn’t like about the Rockland London Carry-On:

Rockland London Hardside Spinner Wheel Luggage, Mint, Carry-On 20-Inch

4.3 / 5 ((11,804))

Build & Materials: Solid but Not Heavy-Duty

The frame is made of ABS plastic, which is inexpensive and light but not as durable as higher-end polycarbonate hardcases.

What You Get:

  • ABS hard shell for lightweight, minimal protection
  • Double spinner wheels in all directions
  • Chrome-finish telescoping push-button handle
  • Top and side carrying handles
  • Interior fully lined with mesh pockets and elastic straps

Note: If you want this carry-on to last, it’s best if you travel with it on board rather than check it.

The empty bag weighs only about 6.5 pounds, so you won’t strain your back putting this in the overhead bin and it won’t take up much of your weight allowance.

The hard shell offers some protection from scratches and minor scuffs, but it’s not meant to take repeated rough baggage handler or stacked on top of other large bags for long periods.

Interior & Packing: Simple, But Roomy

The interior is a pleasant surprise for a budget priced suitcase:

  • Mesh zippered divider panel in the main compartment
  • Compression straps to bundle clothes and keep them from moving around
  • Generous main compartment

It’s surprisingly roomy for a compact-sized carry-on and I easily packed the following for a 4-day trip:

  • 2 pairs of jeans
  • 4 T-shirts
  • 1 pair of shoes
  • Toiletries and travel accessories
  • Traveling dimensions: 20 x 10 x 13 inches
  • Weight: 7.5 pounds packed

The 20-inch size is true carry-on size for most airlines and I found the basic layout intuitive and simple to pack. The big upgrade with this updated version is Rockland added more organization compartments inside the divider panel. It’s a welcome detail that can help you keep track of smaller items like socks, chargers, and passports.

The 20-inch size is a true carry-on for most airlines, and I found the layout intuitive and easy to organize. One standout is that Rockland updated this version with extra compartments inside the divider panel—a nice bonus for organizing smaller items like socks, chargers, or travel documents.

Rolling & Handling: Good for Smooth Travel Only

The 360-degree spinner wheels roll smoothly on airport floors, carpeted hotel floors, and sidewalks. Maneuvering was easy and I didn’t notice any twitching or shaking even when pulling the suitcase backward.

It’s relatively stable and easy to control rolling upright and there’s enough room under the handle to maneuver even in crowded spaces.

The main concern from user reviews is the wheels can break easily if you pull this suitcase a long distance over rough concrete or cobblestones. I found they rolled fine on carpet and smooth surfaces but didn’t have the rigidity to handle a sharp pull with force.

Note: Rockland is inexpensive for a reason. Extend the life of your bag by lifting it over rough terrain rather than dragging it.

Real World Review: Love the Design, Eh on Durability

Positives:

  • “Good design and solid construction for the price.”
  • “I love the bright color, easy to see on the baggage carousel.”
  • “Lightweight, it’s easy to roll and lifts over the jet bridge on my own.”
  • “The size is perfect, doesn’t take up too much space in the overhead bin.”

Negatives:

  • “The wheels are the first thing to go if you check it in often.”
  • “The telescoping handle either sticks or breaks for some buyers.”
  • “Suitcase is flimsy for extended travel to places like Europe and Asia.”

Verdict: If you don’t overpack and take good care of it, the Rockland London Carry-On has potential to last for years (some owners report 100 flights and more). However, if you’re heavy user who checks it frequently or often gate-check it, the wheels and handles may wear out after some time.

Security & Features: Just the Basics

As usual, no included TSA lock since this is a basic version of a suitcase. Zippers are not the thinnest you’ll find, but still good quality, and the hardshell adds some durability for compression or minor accidental damage.

Some versions are sold with corner bumpers on the outside, which add a bit more protection to the hardshell. But if you’re in the habit of often gate-checking it with checked luggage, don’t rely on that feature too much.

Size Compliance: Gate-Check Friendly

Dimensions with wheels: 22” x 13.5” x 10”

Dimensions without wheels: 20” x 10” x 13”

The Rockland London carry-on is within size limits for most U.S. carriers including Delta, United, American, Southwest, and Spirit. It’s a good rule of thumb to double-check if you’re traveling on low-cost international carriers that have stricter size limits for checked luggage.

For U.S. domestic flights, the Rockland London easily fit into overhead bins on Southwest and in the USAirways system. If you don’t overpack it, you’ll have plenty of room for a week’s worth of travel.

Final Thoughts: Great for Vacation or Weekend Getaways

Rockland London Carry-On is a budget-friendly option for travel:

  • Lightweight and easy to roll
  • Bright colors make it easier to spot your bag
  • Lots of packing space for short trips
  • Superior maneuverability for smooth-surface travel

The suitcase is not built to take a beating. If you’re not rough with it (especially when rolling) and keep it with you during flights rather than check it in or gate-check it, it’s good value for the price.

Expect it to handle airport rough and tumble, heavy overpacking, and frequent gate-checking with other large checked bags? Expect issues and might be best to spend a bit more on something more durable.

Best For:

  • Budget-minded travelers
  • Weekend warriors and light packers
  • Occasional flyers who want carry-ons
  • Style-conscious travelers who like color options

Not Ideal For:

  • Frequent or business travelers
  • Frequent bag checkers
  • Rugged or extreme environments
