A low-cost, carry-on suitcase you can actually trust? The BAGSMART 20” was one of the few luggage I bought to actually test on a family vacation to Europe. So after that experience (and some further feedback) I’m going to rip it apart (figuratively), examine it, and reassemble it to figure out how it performs on planes, trains, cobblestone, and overhead bins.

Build & Materials: Light but Strong
The frame of the BAGSMART 20” carry-on is 100% polycarbonate (PC) which is pretty durable and flexible. It has a little texture on the shell that seems to be scratch-resistant (a nice touch for keeping it looking less battered after repeated trips through airport terminals).
It passed drop and impact tests (obviously, being a hardshell) and in person feels substantial without being bulky or overbuilt. With a weight of 6.83 lbs. (just under 3kg), it is on the lighter side but still feels sturdy. The exterior looks good with simple, matte color options and has a hard, rigid shell.
It’s not quite as thick/rigid as the top-of-the-line PC shells like Away or Rimowa but for what it is it feels well constructed, doesn’t wobble and flex when empty, and does exactly what most travelers need a bag to do: get you from point A to point B safely.
Positive aspects:
- Made of lightweight but resistant PC material
- Rubberized handles that are comfortable to lift with
- Durable dual-zippered construction with a side mounted TSA lock
Areas for improvement:
- Shell could be more rigid
- A little wobbly when overpacked
Interior & Packing Space: Roomy and Smart
Inside the BAGSMART 20” dimensions are 22x14x9 inches, which is a standard for an international carry-on that fits almost every overhead bin (including the strictest airlines like United and Delta). Standard capacity is 35L, which is ample for a 3–5 day trip, but an internal expander (one zipper) can boost the space to 42L which is more than generous for most travelers.
There are two fully-lined compartments inside the main zippered body of the bag:
- The left side has a zippered mesh divider and a small valuables pocket
- The right side has compression straps and a waterproof panel
I was able to fit:
- 4 shirts
- 2 pairs of jeans
- 1 light jacket
- 1 pair of shoes
- Travel accessories, toiletries, chargers, etc.
Packing cubes help you pack organized and save even more space.
Overall, it has just enough interior structure to keep things organized but not so much that it limits packing space. For a hard-shell carry-on it’s a relatively roomy bag that’s a good size and offers decent expandability.
Traveler note: The buckle compression system does an amazing job of keeping everything in place without wrinkling.
Wheels & Maneuverability: Quiet, Glides Everywhere
The 360-degree spinner wheels on this BAGSMART are made of a soft TPE rubber and use internal lubricated bearings, so it’s completely silent and smooth over:
- Airport terminals
- Train stations
- Hotel lobbies
- Grocery stores
- And, with some extra elbow grease, rough cobblestone streets
To be frank, in person they are way better than I expected and on par with some more premium models like Samsonite or Away at a fraction of the price.
Bonus feature: The telescopic handle has 4 positions and slides up/down very easily without sticking or wobbling.
Real-World Feedback: Mostly Great, Caveats Apply
On our 10-day European vacation, my family checked 3 of these bags in 3 different colors and all three bags made it home without a scratch, tear, or damage. We rolled it through airports, piled into taxis, and checked two of them on our way back home.
A sample of customer reviews:
Pros
- “Great luggage, fits the FAA-approved carry-on size. Rolls well and looks nice.”
- “Amazingly spacious. We packed two for a 10 day trip and even checked them home.”
- “Nice and easy to maneuver. Good size for weekend trips.”
- “Light and durable.”
Cons
- “Diminutive. It isn’t 22 inches as advertised, it’s smaller.”
- “The zipper broke after the first flight.”
- “The shell is pretty flimsy. If you overpack it, it flexes a lot.”
My take: I’d recommend this bag for casual travelers (1–2 trips per year). The quality is more than fine for that use case but if you travel weekly or push your luggage to the max every time you go out you may want to spend more on something with more rugged build quality.
TSA Lock & Security: Works Fine
The TSA combo lock is a side mounted, standard, three-digit variety that is easy to use. It integrates with the main zipper and is easy to reset for each trip.
Note: This hardshell carry-on is the same as many others in that there is no outside compartment with a quick access zipper. You need to open the clamshell to get to anything inside.
Aesthetic & Colors: Simple and Subtle
The BAGSMART carry-on is not drowning in branding, oversized logos, or garish designs/patterns. The exterior color options are solid and muted:
- Royal Blue
- Olive Green
- Light Gray
- Black
The matte finish helps hide scuffs which also adds to the premium feel.
Travelers who like less-flashy, simple luggage will like the aesthetic.
Customer Support & Warranty
Warranty is 5 years which is solid. I’ve also been told in follow up emails that they respond quickly to emails and support with real customer service (and if the bag is found to be defective at the factory, they replace it).
Travelers have mentioned:
“I had an issue with the handle and customer service was very good.”
“The terms of the warranty are clearly spelled out and fair.”
Do note that you must register your luggage with them after purchase for convenience of claims.

Final Verdict: Solid for Light Travelers
At the price and with the features that it offers, the BAGSMART 20” Expandable Carry-On is a no-brainer for the casual traveler. As someone who takes 2–5 trips a year, I think it’s an incredible value that balances utility, lightweight, and style without burning a big hole in your pocket.
It’s not built for weekly business travelers (probably) but for vacations, weekend trips, or even student travel this is a great budget pick that offers more than enough bang for the buck.
Best For:
- Budget-conscious travelers
- Students or casual flyers
- Lightweight yet stylish carry-on travelers
Not Ideal For:
- Frequent travelers who check bags often
- Overpackers that stretch the bag to the max every trip
- Travelers that need an external pocket for quick-access
Overall Rating: 4.2 / 5

The BAGSMART 20” is one of the better budget-friendly bags on the market. With decent durability, though construction and smart, sleek wheels, it’s a solid option for anyone who wants more than an entry-level carry-on without spending $300+ on luggage.
