Delsey St. Tropez Luggage Review: Elegant Looks with Practical Upgrades

I took the Delsey St. Tropez with me on several recent trips and now it’s time to unpack my full review from first impressions all the way to real-world usage and handling.

Design & Aesthetic Impressions

The St. Tropez definitely makes a good first impression. I ordered the Platinum finish in the 2-piece 21/28-inch set and I was pleasantly surprised by how the subtle metallic sheen and vegan leather accents add an air of sophistication that makes this bag look more designer than its price tag would indicate.

The texture on the shell is barely there but also feels pretty high-end while also helping hide scuffs. The vegan leather trim is a nice touch that looks classy but also helps protect wear points and points of potential impact. Nice touch.

As much as it may look dainty, the St. Tropez doesn’t feel delicate at all. It has a lot of heft to it which is always nice and I also got the sense that a lot of little details went into this design which is rare at this mid-range price point.

Build Quality & Materials

Key Specs:

  • 100% polycarbonate hardshell construction
  • Vegan leather accents
  • Double spinner wheels
  • Integrated TSA-approved combination lock

Expandable zipper section

The polycarbonate hardshell is light yet also has some flex to it. The flex is key since it provides a lot of shock absorption from those little bumps without cracking. It doesn’t feel as indestructible as a Rimowa or Briggs & Riley hard case for example but the St. Tropez definitely feels up to the task at this price.

The wheels are definitely one of the highlights here, easily gliding along while also absorbing those small bumps along the way with minimal resistance. Like many hard cases, the St. Tropez doesn’t have extra corner guards so be prepared not to treat this like a canvas duffel bag. Abuse any hardshell and it will show (to a point).

The zipper runs thickly around the outside of the bag and smoothly along its track with no snagging even when the expansion zipper is zipped out. The integrated lock is an appreciated bonus for a case at this price level, allowing basic theft protection without needing to strap on a separate padlock.

IInterior Organization & Packing

While clean and organized, the St. Tropez’s interior is surprisingly restrained.

Interior Features:

  • Duo fully-lined compartments
  • Mesh zippered divider
  • Built-in compression straps
  • Zipped side pockets for additional storage

The left compartment comes with a mesh divider with built-in pocket, perfect for separating smaller items (socks, chargers, toiletries, etc.) from your clothes and keeping them readily accessible. The right side of the bag has a compression strap which helps compress the contents.

I like the organizational options but I will say the compartments aren’t over-engineered and you still have plenty of open packing space without feeling boxed in by bulky interiors.

I was able to pack five days’ worth of clothing, a jacket, two pairs of shoes, and a laptop bag in the 21-inch carry-on without difficulty. The 28-inch checked bag is the packing beast of beasts in this set and I had no problem packing two weeks’ worth of clothing with room to spare.

Mobility & Rolling Performance

The double spinner wheels are an absolute joy. They roll with zero resistance on airport floors, hotel lobbies, and sidewalks. On one trip, I even had to navigate some pretty bumpy cobblestones and, while the St. Tropez didn’t exactly float, the case handled the transition with flying colors.

The telescopic handle is robust. It snaps in place with very little wiggle and has an ergonomic grip, which makes walking across airports with a full case a lot easier.

Nice touch: The St. Tropez also features grab handles at the top, sides, and bottom, which come in very handy when lifting a full suitcase (especially a heavy one). The handles are padded and work well.

Real-Life User Feedback

Here’s what some other travelers had to say, and I found it pretty consistent with my own experience:

“The wheels glide effortlessly. Makes sprinting around airports way less painful.”

“Beautiful inside and out. Hard to believe it can take that kind of abuse. Got several compliments on how nice it looked too.”

“Great integrated lock and simple interior layout.”

“Scratches show easily if you’re not careful.” (I agree, especially with darker color choices.)

“It expands enough to fit souvenirs on the way back home!” (One of my personal favorites.)

Some users did mention cosmetic scuffs after checking the case, but that’s to be expected with any hardshell.er checking the luggage, but that’s normal for any hardshell case.

Areas That Could Improve

Scratches Visibility: The finish is beautiful, but it’s prone to scratches over time. I recommend getting a lighter color if you want to mitigate that.

Missing Separate Laundry Pouch: A few of its competitors offer a dirty clothes bag. It’s not a deal breaker by any means but would have been a nice bonus.

Telescopic Handle Flex: The telescopic handle has a very slight flex when fully extended. It was never game-breaking to me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if others felt differently.

Final Thoughts on the Delsey St. Tropez

The St. Tropez is one of the better hardshell suitcases in its price range. Delsey did a good job at nailing the trifecta of luxury design and build quality without sacrificing a ton of functionality. The St. Tropez will get you:

  • Premium build quality
  • Streamlined aesthetic
  • Smooth, mobile wheels
  • Slick interior features

Overall, while it’s no ultra-premium luxury luggage (nothing is in that price range!) the St. Tropez is a great fit for those who want style and sturdiness without the hassle of breakability. It’s not quite ‘toss it off the roof’ material but who cares — it’ll handle typical rigors of travel with aplomb.

Best Suited for:

  • Travelers who want a stylish, designer-inspired suitcase
  • Frequent flyers who are looking for a touch of flair without the ultra-premium price tag
  • Light travel needs and medium to longer trips
  • Those who want lightweight ease
  • Those who prefer traditional suitcase shape

Not ideal for:

  • Adventure travelers or those who need a truly indestructible bag
  • Extremely rough baggage handling

Who Should Buy the Delsey St. Tropez?

The St. Tropez is a great pick for travelers who want something that looks great, rolls easily, and has solid organization for all trip types.

Travelers who prefer to stick to the tried and true suitcase shape will find the St. Tropez a lot of fun to use, especially if you want something with a bit of modern flair.

Buyers looking for a stylish carry-on and expandable checked option will be happy to find this comes in sets of different sizes, like the 21/28-inch set I reviewed.

What to Avoid Purchasing Instead

Budget heavyweights like the Samsonite Winfield International. Samsonite may be more of a dime a dozen these days, but their highest-quality bags from the Winfield International line are still well-built and their wheels are among the best.

Most direct competitors to the Delsey St. Tropez come from Samsonite, Briggs & Riley, and Travelpro. Most of the offerings from those brands at the St. Tropez’s price point have more or less the same level of build quality and features.

Personally, I’d recommend opting for the Samsonite Ace Set 21/28-inch. Samsonite has built a solid reputation with great luggage, and the wheels on the Ace lineup are some of the best on the market (no skipping when transitioning surfaces and very quiet, especially compared to the St. Tropez). The Ace also features a garment compartment and a bonus inside dirty laundry bag, so in my opinion, it edges out the Delsey St. Tropez just a bit.

Overall Rating: 4.3/5

The Delsey St. Tropez is one of the more beautiful hardshell suitcases out there and for a case in this price point, it offers a pretty premium interior and feels pretty high quality all around.

Delsey did a good job finding that perfect trifecta of design, build quality, and usability and it comes in recommended as a solid choice for most regular flyers. You’re getting more for less but remember, it’s not indestructible (nobody’s is at that price! ).

If you’re already on the fence about which carry-on or checked hardshell to buy, then the St. Tropez is a great fit for most travel needs and one of the better options available. If you love it, I’d recommend it. But I’d also love to hear your experiences if you own a Delsey St. Tropez. Hit me up in the comments.
