SwissGear 4010 Softside Luggage Review: Lightweight, Reliable, Roomy

Are you looking for a soft-sided bag that is reasonably priced, yet high quality? The SwissGear 4010 Softside Spinner series fits the bill. SwissGear has been around for a long time and has multiple models for suitcases and duffel bags. I put this line through its paces for over a year with the 18″ carry-on model before selling it on to a friend (included are user reviews from verified purchasers across Amazon and other sites). SwissGear’s carry-on/checked-luggage series has been long and highly regarded.

Build & Materials

SwissGear 4010 18-Inch Carry On Luggage is made of abrasion-resistant polyester fabric. This fabric is lightweight, but also has some heft to it to repel any gashes from baggage claim doors, etc., yet is flexible and can be compressed when necessary (great for overhead compartments or smaller car trunks, for example).

One of the first things you’ll notice when you pull the 4010 out of the box is how light it is. For a full 27″ checked model it only weighs in at about 8.35 lbs, which is excellent for its size.

“It’s big as practical and holds 50 pounds snugly… I like the light weight of the 27” bag.” — Cactus Patch (Nov 2024)

Sizes and Options

SwissGear’s 4010 Series:

  • 18-Inch Carry-On
  • 23-Inch Medium Checked
  • 27-Inch Large Checked
  • 3-Piece Set (Includes all of the above)

I recommend the 18-inch carry-on size because it not only fits within most US airline carry-on guidelines, but also European airlines (25″ total). I took my 4010 with me to Europe a few times and never had to pay any excess baggage fees, and it still fit under the seat in front of me on some international flights. The size should also be sufficient for a well-packed week’s worth of clothes.

“Size is most useful for short travel. I use it mostly for weekends or 5 day trips. It is holding up great so far through over 50 trips.” — Terry (Mar 2025)

Wheels & Maneuverability

I have to admit, one of the best features of the SwissGear 4010 series is the 360-degree spinner wheels. The case literally just glides on wheels, and it’s a lot of fun to navigate large terminals, airplane aisles, or even rougher surfaces like tile floors, sidewalk curbs, etc.

Granted, there are other spinners with 8 wheels. I won’t argue that four wheels are better than eight. In practice, though, they are quiet and well-made four multi-directional spinner wheels that handle much heavier loads just fine.

“Handled almost all the airport bumps with no problem and stood up to the rough tiled streets of Lisbon with aplomb.” — Mark E. (Apr 2023)

Interior & Packing Layout

The interior of the SwissGear 4010 is quite roomy, and a lot of thought has been put into the packing organization.

Adjustable tie-down straps that can compress your clothes are a nice touch. There are several internal mesh pockets, ideal for things like undergarments, toiletries, cables, etc.

Zippered compartments located in the front that can be accessed easily are also a big help for travel items, important documents, and last-minute packing.

One small feature I liked is the length of the top front pocket, as it extends nearly the full length of the bag. It’s unusual, and means you can store really long, flat items (scarves, laptops, rolled dress shirts, etc.) in there.nger, flatter items like a scarf, laptop, or even rolled dress shirts.

“The top zippered front pocket is full length… very long and flat things can be put into the top zippered front pocket.” — Cactus Patch

Handles & Portability

The retractable locking handle is comfortable and retracts quite smoothly with a simple pull. The only quibble here is that a couple of reviewers mentioned some rattling or loosening after a long time.

The top lift handle is also pretty easy to use, though very light-weight in construction. It’s nice to have this additional portable handle if you need to set the bag down and pick it up again to balance a cup of coffee in your free hand, for example. This is especially nice if you are heavier set and lifting items into car trunks or overhead bins can be tiring.

“Very lightweight and easy to lift into the overhead compartment.” — Mark E.

Real-World Feedback

The SwissGear 4010 Softside series has hundreds of reviews at Amazon and other online retailers. This is in line with similar SwissGear luggage models (there are some big differences in bag numbers across Amazon’s own SwissGear store, for example), which are known for being a cheaper option to things like Briggs and Riley, but still much higher quality than Samsonite, for example.

SwissGear 4010 Luggage gets consistently high marks for:

  • Lightweight construction
  • Spinner wheels (easy to navigate all types of surfaces, airports)
  • Solid bag durability
  • Stylish (simple, sleek black is always on-trend)
  • Affordable

“Good carry-on size… stood up to multiple transatlantic trips and an RT transcontinental flt, a few times as checked luggage.” — Doug P. (June 2024)

“We love the Swiss luggage. We have had them for many years. I used to travel for a living and used them all the time!” — Georjean S. (Dec 2024)

Not Ideal For…

The SwissGear 4010 is not going to be the right bag for every traveler. I think it falls down in these areas:

  • Frequent business travelers who need pockets/sleeves for laptops and/or built-in USB charging ports
  • Travelers who like to over-pack and need expandable space (the 4010 will not expand)
  • Luxury travelers who want high-end materials and features

“The handle… this is where it falls off the cliff unless you figure it out. Don’t try to overpack it and you’re laughing.” — Doug P.

Final Verdict

The SwissGear 4010 Softside Spinner series is one of the better bags in the mid-range travel bag market. It checks off most of the boxes (portability, durability, and all-around smart design) at an attractive price. It’s well-suited to weekend warriors, college students, or even seasoned travelers who just want a secondary or emergency backup bag.

Where it lacks in luxury bells and whistles, it makes up for it in not going on the fritz after a few uses, lightweight portability, and excellent organization. Whether you’re zooming through the airport, packing for that cross-country road trip, or even just looking for luggage that’s not going to give up on you, this is an easy recommendation.
