Pelican ATX Luggage Hard Case Review: Military-Grade Protection

Pelican’s high durability military-spec gear cases are a well-known sight among emergency service workers and military personnel. Using the same armor-like materials as their bombproof field cases, Pelican has created the ATX Luggage Hard Case to keep your belongings safe even in extremely rugged travel conditions.

Build & Materials

Out of the box, this suitcase feels like a brick of solid iron. It is, however, made from Pelican’s ultra-tough Armor Polypropylene Shell. This is a premium polymer suitcase shell that is much thicker and rigid than a standard polycarbonate hardshell or an ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) case. It is also IP67 waterproof and dustproof.

It saw six different airports, four baggage claims, and even survived a rainstorm on the tarmac without a single scratch or crack in its armor. Standard zippers are a weak point on luggage, and many travelers have stories of a zipper failing mid-flight with hundreds of pounds of pressure inside. For this reason, the ATX uses TSA-approved locking latches, which was a really nice feature.

Internal Layout & Organization

The interior of the ATX lives up to the expectations set by its rugged shell. The thick rip-stop liner is high-quality and won’t tear even when overstuffed. It also has compression straps to keep everything tightly packed down in transit. There is also a large zippered mesh organizer to divide clothes from other items.

Pelican also included an air pressure equalization valve on the luggage to prevent seal warping when going through altitude changes. This feature is a staple on Pelican’s field cases and makes the suitcase much easier to open after flights.

Rolling & Handling

The Pelican ATX Luggage Hard Case weighs in at 18.5 lbs empty, so this is not a light carry-on. However, the Hinomoto spinner wheels make it glide smoothly and quietly. It is also surprisingly easy to maneuver around a busy airport terminal or over rough concrete sidewalk. The sturdy multi-stage telescopic handle extends with a satisfying click and locks securely in place.

The dual grab handles (one at the top, one at the side) are well-padded, and I really liked the grab handle rail at the rear of the case, which allowed me to easily grab it off the luggage carousel.

Style & Identity

The Pelican ATX Luggage Hard Case is a very loud suitcase. The Pelican logo embossment is definitely tactical-style and often gets extra attention from TSA or airport security, especially in Europe. Several people also mentioned having to endure extra screening and picking it up from the oversized baggage area in the past. You might consider adding custom decals or patches to personalize the case and make it easily identifiable.

After some time with it, I found that I really started to like the design. It is bold, clean, and utilitarian. The ATX is currently available in Black, Sand, and Charcoal colors. It will not win any fashion or style awards, but then again, that is not what this luggage is for.

“The best suitcase I have ever owned, although the price is…astronomical. Everything about the build is just well thought out, from the latches to the gasket.”

“I have been sorely burned from a lot of luggage purchases over the years and I just caved and spent the money. I am not disappointed. It is on the heavy side but well worth it for peace of mind when traveling with equipment.”

“A few of my friends own pelican cases so I knew what to expect from this suitcase. Wheels feel indestructible. Landed home without a scratch after a dozen flights.”

“Tried this on a 30 day road trip. Pelican is just as tough and well made as their reputation. Definitely holds up.”

Final Verdict

The Pelican ATX Luggage Hard Case is a tank, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. It is not for your casual weekend getaway or the family trip when you have to pack way too many clothes. But if you are looking for truly bulletproof protection, a completely waterproof design, and something that will easily go from plane to pickup truck to backcountry trail, then this is the suitcase for you.

It is expensive, but the price is commensurate with the ruggedness of the design. Pelican designed this to last for decades, and you can see that in the Made in USA construction on every corner of the product. I am not a digital nomad by any means, but I do travel often and with more expensive gear. I can easily see this coming in handy on my next trip and as a case I can pass down through the family. If you need a suitcase that can take a beating, take a look at the Pelican ATX Luggage Hard Case.
