Does Emirates Allow a Personal Item in Economy?
Emirates considers the Economy allowance to be one item of cabin baggage. Do not assume that you can also bring a full-size separate backpack, laptop bag or handbag along with your suitcase.
Allowed quantities of duty free purchases are permitted, but they are still subject to security and liquid restrictions. Cabin baggage must fit under the seat or in an overhead compartment.
Why the 22 cm Depth Matters
A lot of carry-ons are based on what Americans conveniently roll around domestically: 22 × 14 × 9. Nine inches is 22.9 cm exactly, so those bags are deeper than Emirates’ listed 22 cm restriction.
The difference sounds trivial, but remember that when packed or expanded, suitcases can easily get deeper still. To minimize your chances of any issue, pack a bag that truly measures 22 cm deep or less, and don’t inflate it with an expansion zipper pre-flight.

Popular Carry-Ons That Are Not Technically Emirates-Compliant
Just because a suitcase is advertised as a carry-on doesn’t make it compliant.
Consider these three carry-ons:
- Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry On Spinner: 23 × 14.5 × 9 listed dimensions with wheels and handles. Too tall and too deep for Emirates.
- LEVEL8 Luminous Textured Carry-On : 21.5 × 14.5 × 9.2 listed dimensions. Too deep; maximum depth is 22 cm.
- Most no-name “standard” 22″ x 14″ x 9″ US carry-ons are about .9 cm too deep.
Sure they may work, but they aren’t great examples for a guide purporting to have Emirates compliant luggage. YMMV by airport, route and staff member inside the airport; but published compliance is the best assurance you have.
How to Choose an Emirates-Compliant Carry-On
Check Complete Exterior Dimensions
Look for measurements that account for wheels, fixed handles, side feet and exterior pockets. Products that only list dimensions for the packing compartment itself can sometimes seem smaller than they really are.
Don’t shop with terms like “20-inch” or “international carry-on” alone. There is no industry standard for these.
Keep the Empty Weight Low
Weight is just as important as size when flying with Emirates. If your suitcase weighs 3.5 kg you only have another 3.5 kg available for your items if you’re flying Economy.
Here’s how we break down suitcase weights for most Economy travelers:
- Sub-2 kg: Perfect
- 2 kg to 2.5 kg: Acceptable
- 2.5 kg to 3 kg: You’ll need to pack wisely

Premium Economy flyers enjoy a nice 10 kg weight allowance, but a lighter bag is still more convenient when lifting into the overhead bin.
Avoid Expansion Options
An expansion zipper can increase the depth of a carry-on bag by a couple of inches. If the depth of your bag measures right at 22 cm when zipped closed, it’s going to be oversized when that expansion zipper is undone.
Pack your bag in its typical setup and make sure exterior pockets aren’t overstuffed.
Pick Capacity With Care
Bigger isn’t always better. Keep in mind that manufacturer declared capacities are not always figured in the same way.
The exterior dimensions and empty weight of a bag are better places to look when airline compliance is your main concern.

Hardside bags offer more structure and protection for fragile items. Soft-sided bags typically offer more access via pockets and a bit of flexibility in shape. Backpacks don’t use as much of your weight allowance but they do force you to carry everything on your back.

How to Stay Under Emirates’ 7 kg Limit
Weigh your empty bag first. Then deduct that weight from your payload remaining. Get yourself a small digital bag scale. It’s easier (and more accurate) than guessing weight in your hands.
Pack on your heaviest shoes and coat at the gate. Pack your smallest toiletries. Leave duplicate charger behind and pour liquids into travel sized (100 ml or less) containers. Emirates says, “All cabin liquids should be carried in a clear resealable bag with a capacity of no more than one litre.”
Pack your heaviest nonessentials together. You may need to move them to your checked bag if you get too heavy. Never rely on your bag being small enough to not get weighed.
