Herschel Luggage Carry-On Review: Stylish, Sustainable, and Surprisingly Silent

I’ve tested plenty of carry-ons in my day — from budget spinners to mid- and high-end aluminum tanks. So when I got my hands on the Herschel for testing, I was pleased to find a few surprising attributes. It’s not only stylish (though it is very much that), but also the materials, mobility, and interior layout have been thought through. The result is an attractive option whether you’re in the market for a weekend travel bag or a sleek new business carry-on.

Here’s my detailed review.

Design & Build Quality

The first thing I noticed was how eco-conscious Herschel is being with this bag. The hardshell is 70% recycled road barricade material, which is honestly a neat detail (not just from a green, eco-conscious angle but also in terms of how solid and travel-ready it feels). I didn’t have to baby it when throwing it into overhead compartments or schlepping it down subway stairs.

The liner is made from 100% recycled material post-consumer water bottles. Again, this is where most recycled fabrics often “feel” crunchy or flimsy. Herschel hasn’t skimped here — it still has the familiar feel of a plush, softly structured texture.

And lastly, the corners are reinforced for extra protection (something my previous bags could have used a little more of), and it feels surprisingly more rugged than I would’ve guessed for a bag only made for carry-on. While it likely can handle some rough handling (like being tossed around by baggage handlers), Herschel does point out in the description that it is, in fact, only a carry-on.

Interior & Packing

Opening the bag up reveals a split-case interior design, which I’m always a fan of in a carry-on for better organization. The zippered mesh compartment on one side is great for containing and holding together smaller items (no more flying socks when TSA agents rifle through your bag!). Meanwhile, the elastic garment straps with a buckle on the other side can cinch down on your clothing to keep it compressed and less wrinkled.

The dual zippers inside are also smooth and very intuitive. It’s one of those little design details that sound trivial on paper, but when you’re exhausted and scrambling to repack for a 1AM red-eye, every little bit of friction reduction helps.

In terms of packing capacity, it’s fairly standard for a carry-on. However, due to the efficient design and the lack of bulky internal framing, I was able to pack:

  • 2 pairs of shoes
  • 4 days’ worth of clothes
  • Toiletry bag
  • Tech pouch
  • Lightweight jacket

If you pack smartly (no bulky hotel-sized amenities, overpacking, etc. ), this is more than capable of a full 3–5 day trip.

Mobility: Wheels & Handles

Where the Herschel really impressed me, however, was in the rolling and handling department.

The Hinomoto 360° spinner wheels are inset, which means they’re less likely to snap off in transit. But more importantly, they are whisper-quiet. I pushed this bag around hotel lobbies, bumpy sidewalks, and airport terminals, and I heard zero complaints from the other end. No obnoxious rattling, vibrating, or jolting. It glides with minimal sound.

The multistage trolley handle locks at different lengths, and I appreciated that too (being 5’6″ isn’t always kind for rolling luggage, which can sometimes feel either too high or too low). It feels sturdy with no wobble and easily retracts. The low-profile side and top handles are easy to grab on too and feel quite premium. The debossed logo is a nice touch if you’re someone who appreciates the subtle branding.

Real-World Feedback

I tested out the Woodland Camo version myself, and wow — this bag attracts attention in a good way. I had TSA agents complement it as well as random strangers. It stands out from the sea of black rolling luggage on the conveyor belt, but it isn’t obnoxious or try-hard in any way.

One verified Amazon review in February 2025 put it nicely:

“Perfect size and great stand-out color.” — Verified Amazon Review (Feb 2025)

And another happy buyer from Herschel’s own site posted how the purchase became a set for her son:

“He has the backpack and the 21-inch. I was able to find the same color so now he has a coordinated set. Their customer service and warranty are the best.” — Hoda (Oct 2024)

I haven’t had to reach out to customer service (yet! ), but I appreciate Herschel’s limited lifetime warranty. Plus, their rep as a lifestyle brand bleeds into how they treat buyers, it seems.

Not Ideal For…

However, this carry-on isn’t a good fit for:

Overpackers: If you tend to max out the allowable dimensions or want to stuff souvenirs or clothing on your return flight, this bag’s capacity may feel a little on the restrictive side.

Business travelers who need internal tech compartments: If you want a built-in padded laptop sleeve or USB charging ports, this bag isn’t it. There’s no such features.

International flyers who have stricter carry-on size regulations: Double-check your airline’s specific carry-on dimensions (some European airlines are stricter), as this bag is on the longer end at times.

Final Verdict

The Herschel carry-on surprised me in the best way possible. It blends the eco-conscious materials with a clean aesthetic, modern touches, and practical use. It doesn’t go overboard with tech gimmicks either (and I actually appreciate that) — what you’re getting is a well-built, quiet, and stylish spinner that’s a nice alternative for urban travelers, students, and creative professionals looking for a hard-sided bag that both looks and functions great.

If you’re in the market for a quiet, modern spinner that offers real travel durability and sustainability points, the Herschel should make your shortlist.
