SwissGear Sion II Softside Luggage Review: Travel-Ready Comfort Meets Smart Design

SwissGear has long been a leader in dependable, stylish and functional luggage. They’ve built up a positive reputation among frequent fliers and more casual travelers. Their new Sion II Softside Luggage collection continues that trend. I recently had the chance to road test this popular set on a multi-stop journey, and I have to say it performed well above expectations.

Build & Materials

The Sion II is made from a polyester fabric that strikes a great balance between flexibility and sturdiness. The softside construction doesn’t hold its shape as rigidly as hard-shell luggage, but it is more forgiving when jamming into an overhead bin or car trunk. Yet it also has reinforced corner guards and rugged stitching to keep things sturdy. The first thing I noticed is the quality of the exterior fabric. It has a nice heft to it and resists scuffs. The black color is also sleek, professional and hides wear well. It looked nearly new after rolling it on airport terminals, sidewalks and parking lots.

The interior seams are cleanly stitched, and the zippers feel heavy duty. SwissGear clearly chose quality materials across the board, and it shows in the tactile experience and durability of the bag.

Spinner Wheels & Maneuverability

One feature of the Sion II that really impressed me is the 360-degree spinner maneuverability. The set is equipped with eight slick rolling wheels. In practice, this made weaving through crowds at airports effortless. I found it easy to navigate narrow airplane aisles and make quick pivots around busy terminal areas with zero drag.

The retractable handle locks securely into place and adjusts to multiple heights. It feels solid even when I’m rushing at top speed between gates. The top and side handles are generously padded and make lifting the suitcase into an overhead bin far easier than I expected.

The lightweight build and spinner wheels combine to make this an exceptionally agile piece of luggage. I barely noticed the weight when I was navigating packed terminals, even when it was full to the brim.

Interior & Packing Efficiency

Internally, the Sion II is very well thought out. Each suitcase comes with multiple mesh pockets, a removable zippered wet pouch and adjustable tie-down straps. When I used the set on a recent 5-day trip, I was able to pack very efficiently with packing cubes, and still had plenty of leftover room.

I was particularly glad for the expandable feature. Simply unzipping the extension added up to 20% more packing space– just enough for souvenirs or those last minute clothing additions. The expandable feature is the difference between smart packing and leaving things behind.

The included wet pocket came in particularly handy after a rainy day in Prague. I was able to toss in my soaked jacket without drenching the rest of my clothes. SwissGear is clearly aware of what real travelers need.

Exterior Pockets & Storage

There are also two front-facing exterior zip compartments on the Sion II. These are great for stowing items like a travel pillow, passport, phone charger or even a slim laptop or tablet. I used the top pocket to quickly stash my grab-and-go essentials during layovers and greatly appreciated not having to rummage through the main suitcase compartment.

I was surprised at how roomy the dual front pockets are. I fit a paperback book, travel documents, and even a water bottle in one. The other held snacks and a folded hoodie.

Enhanced Lift Handles & Comfort

SwissGear included enhanced lift handles on both the top and side of each suitcase. These were game changers when loading/unloading into car trunks or overhead compartments. The handles are well-padded and comfortable to hold.

The handle on the bottom of the bag is another small yet extremely useful detail. I found myself constantly using it to help lift the bag without fumbling to find a grip.

Real-World Feedback

Real-world user reviews of the SwissGear Sion II are solid:

  • “Nice suitcases. They are well made, went on a trip and they worked wonderful.”
  • “Very elegant and functional. The wheels run smoothly and it fits my travel reality perfectly.”
  • Lots of other reviews praise the bags’ durability, maneuverability, and practical layout. Many comment specifically on the compact carry-on being spacious for its size and easily fitting in overhead bins. The softside checked luggage model also gets plenty of mentions.

Overall, even after months of heavy use many people are reporting little wear and tear, so the Sion II series seems to hold up over time.

Additional Details & Practical Use

A nice detail is the Sion II also comes in a variety of sizes. I used the 24-inch version for my European trip, but there is a 20-inch carry-on and 28-inch checked size. The carry-on is compact and cabin friendly, while the larger size meets airline checked baggage requirements.

Packing the medium size for a week-long trip was a snap. I easily fit five shirts, three pants, gym clothes, two pairs of shoes and toiletries with room to spare. The compression straps were helpful in condensing things down.

When flying home I unzipped the expansion zipper and had plenty of room to easily stuff the extra jacket and souvenirs I picked up. Nothing felt crammed in tight.
