Mixi Luggage Review: Chic, Lightweight, and Surprisingly Tough

Mixi isn’t a brand you’ll immediately recognize, but this stylish line is starting to make a name for itself selling sleek, lightweight luggage with features that feel unexpectedly high-end. After testing a 20-inch carry-on and reading across a variety of other user reviews in sizes from 14 to 28 inches, I can say with confidence that if you’re in the market for well-designed function with great attention to detail, Mixi is well worth your time.

There are a few compromises though, of course. Here’s the full scoop.

Build & Materials: “Soft Steel” With a Luxe Feel

Mixi suitcases feature a three-layer Bayer PC construction which the brand calls “Soft Steel.” It has a slightly softer, more pliable feel than you’d expect from your standard ABS or ABS+PC blend. The result is an excellent balance between featherweight portability and impact-resistance against moderate abuse.

The inside of Mixi luggage is surprisingly neat and well designed too:

The telescoping handle extends and locks cleanly too. During testing, it performed admirably with tight turns, curbs, and dragging along public transit platforms.

Additional notes:

After walking 36km, the wheels had lost ~2mm of tread (according to Mixi). That’s about 3x longer than the industry standard for a suitcase.

Mixi’s handles passed 1500 shock tests and 9000 fatigue tests, which is impressive on paper and consistent with real-world impressions from users.

Mixi hits that sweet spot of design, function, and price that so many brands miss. If you’re looking for a suitcase that will keep up with regular use and make it easy to pack for weekend getaways, their smaller carry-on sizes are an excellent option. I’d recommend sizes 14″ to 20″ especially for commuters, light packers, or travelers who want a suitcase that performs as well as it looks.

Just be aware that the larger checked sizes may not stand up to repeated airport abuse. Be prepared to test the lock and zippers before your first trip as well.
