LUGGEX Carry On Luggage Review: Smart Front-Pocket Design Tested

On the surface, front-opening carry-ons have become something of a rarity in the mainstream. Yet dig a little deeper, and you’ll quickly find that while there are a plethora of such options on the market, very few of them get the formula right. After spending time digging through the actual feedback of real travelers, coupled with an up-close look at the design elements that have gone into the LUGGEX Carry On Luggage 22x14x9 Airline Approved, it’s no wonder this suitcase is continually being brought up by frequent flyers and business travelers alike.

This is not a “gimmick” suitcase. It is a well-designed carry-on that prioritizes airport efficiency, silent mobility, and smart internal compartment separation. If you travel with laptops, charging cables, and tech accessories and you find yourself constantly having to juggle two bags every time you go through security, this is one well-designed carry-on that’s worth a closer look.

Build & Materials

The first and perhaps most noticeable thing that you’ll notice about the LUGGEX is how sturdily it is built without having to be unnecessarily heavy. Weighing in at 9 pounds, it hits right in the target zone for a hard-shell polycarbonate carry-on, especially one that has a reinforced and secure front laptop compartment.

The hard shell is crafted from 100 percent polycarbonate, not ABS plastic, and that is a detail that actually does matter. Polycarbonate flexes slightly upon impact rather than cracking or chipping, which is exactly what you want when your bag inevitably gets smushed into overhead bins or dragged across airport floors. We heard from a few long-term travelers that the case exhibited minimal scuffing after a dozen or so trips and no structural damage.

Zippers are another area that the LUGGEX absolutely excels in. The double-layer, reinforced, burst-resistant zipper system is one of the thickest, smoothest, and most confidence-inspiring zippers in this price range. On more than one occasion, we found reviewers specifically singling out the zipper quality as above expectations, especially for the price relative to the competition. The zipper pulls blend smoothly into the locking system as well, which helps to keep snagging to a minimum.

On the whole, the LUGGEX feels like a well-built suitcase without feeling over-engineered. It also feels made to be used frequently and is clearly not targeted toward “vacation-only” type usage.

Front Laptop Compartment Design

This is, of course, the one area that is going to be the defining feature of any front-opening carry-on. The fact that the LUGGEX has gone with a front-to-rear separation is a major reason that this suitcase really starts to set itself apart.

The main benefit is that the laptop compartment does not intrude upon the main bulk of the packing area. In a small way, this might not sound like a big deal, but the difference it makes in real-life use is actually quite significant. Your tech is flat, protected, and segregated from your clothes, shoes, and toiletries.

The front compartment also easily fits up to a 16-inch laptop, as well as tablets, documents, and charging equipment. On more than one occasion, we have come across reviewers specifically highlighting how easy it was to quickly pull a laptop out during TSA inspection without having to open the main compartment or disturb a packed outfit.

For anyone who frequently travels, this alone should help justify why someone should consider this suitcase over a traditional clamshell design. Not only do you move through security faster, but you also remain more organized and completely eliminate the awkward, unbalanced dance of holding both a backpack and a carry-on at the scanner.

The only minor limitation to point out here is with regard to the available depth. If you tend to use bulky headphone cases, insulated bags for tech accessories, or an especially large power bank, the front pocket can feel a touch tight when fully loaded. It’s not a deal-breaker by any means, but it is worth being aware of if you typically carry a lot of tech accessories.

Interior & Packing Space

In the realm of raw capacity and packing space, the LUGGEX claims 38 liters and can expand to 42 liters. In practical use, the packing layout is a bit different than a typical carry-on due to the space allocated for the front compartment.

For the vast majority of travelers, this will mean 2-3 days’ worth of clothing or a well-packed weekend trip without feeling crowded. We did hear from travelers who attempted to make it stretch to 4 or 5 days, and they noted that it starts to feel quite snug, either unless you are packing extremely minimally or you are open to doing laundry during a trip.

Inside, the LUGGEX employs a peach-skin, velvet-like lining that feels smooth and premium against the fingers. It is quite pleasant at this price point and does a good job at preventing scuffs on more delicate items. Compression straps help with keeping clothes from shifting around too much, and the mesh pockets are strong enough for smaller items of note.

The zipper expansion is a fairly common feature, but in this case, it adds perhaps a 10 percent increase in capacity which is especially handy for the return trip when you have souvenirs or extra items. Expansion does not feel sloppy or uncontrolled, so this feature has not been an issue for anyone.

If you are looking to replace both a carry-on and a laptop backpack with a single bag, then this interior layout makes sense. That said, do not expect it to function quite the same as a full clamshell carry-on without a tech compartment.

Wheels & Handling

Wheel performance is another one of those areas that absolutely lives up to the hype with this suitcase.

The 360-degree, silent spinner wheels are among the smoothest we have tested and glide exceptionally well over tile, carpet, and uneven airport flooring. On more than one occasion, we have found travelers comparing them favorably to the more premium competitors and still noting that they remain quiet when pushed through early-morning hotel hallways.

Handling in general feels stable whether the bag is lightly or fully loaded. There is no wobble in the telescoping handle, and directional control is excellent. If you frequently find yourself having to hoof it over long airport terminals or navigate crowded, hectic airports, this is a quality-of-life upgrade that quickly makes itself known.

Compared to other front-opening carry-ons in the same price point, the LUGGEX’s wheels are consistently brought up as one of the best features.

TSA Locks & Security

Security is, of course, another area where it appears that the designers behind the LUGGEX clearly put some thought and care into.

The suitcase makes use of a TSA-approved, dual-zone locking system that allows for both the front laptop compartment and the main packing area to be secured with a single lock. This feature is not common for this price point and does add a bit of additional peace of mind, especially when you’re traveling with pricier electronics.

The locking mechanism itself also feels more substantial, and multiple users have commented that they preferred being able to lock each compartment separately instead of having just a central zipper pull to contend with. We do have some reports of stiffness in the lock mechanism early on, but the consensus appears to be that this smooths out after some use.

For anyone who frequently has to travel between airports, hotels, and shared transit, this lock system alone is a meaningful step up.

Real-World Travel Feedback

By far the thing that sticks out the most from the real-world reviews by travelers is just how frequently you will see people comment on how this carry-on has helped reduce friction during travel. The front pocket speeds up security checks, the wheels cut down on fatigue, and the interior organization means you don’t need a second bag.

Frequent business travelers consistently comment on just how quiet the wheels are and how simple it is to pull a laptop out while on a tight connection. Casual travelers also appreciated the included dust cover, the eco-friendly packaging and lack of filler materials, and the overall presentation in general.

The most common critique we heard across the board was related to packing capacity expectations. This is not a magic 7-10-day carry-on. It is made to be efficient and smart with its use of space rather than an absolute volume champ. If you come into it understanding that, travelers who have bought it have been largely very satisfied with their purchase.

Airline Compatibility

Oddly enough, despite technically being slightly above the strictest of airline carry-on requirements on paper when expanded, the LUGGEX seems to fit just fine in overhead bins on most major U.S. airlines based on multiple travelers’ accounts.

Unexpanded, it will perform identically to any other 22-inch carry-on. Expanded, it is more a case of knowing that your airline has leeway or you are confident that the overhead bins are not a space crunch.

For U.S. domestic flights and most international airlines that have standard overhead bins, we have not seen this be a compatibility issue in the real world.

Not Ideal For

As a result, if you primarily travel with bulky items such as sweaters, shoes, or you need space for a full week without having to do laundry, this suitcase might not be for you. If you are used to the traditional clamshell design or prefer using packing cubes to separate dirty laundry, you might also find the layout a bit less intuitive.

The LUGGEX Carry On Luggage 22x14x9 Airline Approved delivers on the promise of providing travelers with a smoother flow through airports, better organization, and a quieter, more premium travel experience.

Final Thoughts

This is not a suitcase that tries to do everything for everyone. Instead, it really excels at being a tech-friendly, efficiency-optimized carry-on for those looking to make flying less stressful. Between the front laptop compartment, top-tier wheels, premium-grade shell material, and a well-designed locking system, this LUGGEX carry-on punches quite a bit above its weight in terms of providing value.

If you travel frequently with electronics and desire to have a single carry-on bag that can replace both a suitcase and a laptop backpack or messenger bag, this is one of the better front-opening bags currently on the market.
