Delsey Paris Clavel Hardside Review: Lightweight Durability Meets French Elegance

In search of a slim, super-light suitcase that actually works in the real world of travel? Look no further than the Delsey Paris Clavel Hardside Spinner. I put this suitcase through its paces on domestic and international flights, cobblestone sidewalks, ferries and buses. I can say without hesitation it’s one of the best for functionality and price.

In this review I cover its features and my own impressions from using the 30-inch medium-size checked suitcase.

Build & Materials: Feather-Light but Tough

Crafted from 100% polypropylene, the Clavel is Delsey’s lightest ever hardside collection. It really does feel it too: Weighing just 7.7 lbs in the medium checked size (9.8 lbs for the 30-inch large) this is a featherweight by most standards but without the flimsy build that often comes with the territory.

The Clavel also features a scratch-resistant matte finish that has held up beautifully after numerous flights, ferry rides and once being tied to the back of a quad bike (true story) and still looks almost new. It’s also worth mentioning this bag won the 2020 Red Dot Design Award for good reason: Clean lines, sculpted curves and minimal branding give it a distinctive modern appearance.

Bonus: I also like the bright colors (army green, blue and red) not only for fashion but also practicality since it’s easy to spot on baggage carousels.

Security: Secure Zipper System & Locking Mechanism

The Clavel has Delsey’s patented SECURITECH zipper – a double-layered zipper system which is 3 times more resistant to intrusion than traditional zippers. This also reduces the likelihood of a zipper blowout (yes, this has happened to me with cheaper bags) by minimizing gaps along the seams. The integrated TSA-approved combination lock provides additional security.

The zipper did feel stiff initially when I first received the bag but after opening and closing it a few times it loosened up and now opens and closes smoothly.

Interior & Packing Experience: Clean, Functional, and Expandable

Flip open the Clavel and you’re greeted with two full packing compartments:

  • One side is equipped with an elastic cross-strap for corralling down clothes.
  • The other side has a zippered mesh divider which helps to keep things organized and separated.
  • There’s also a small zippered internal pocket which is perfect for accessories, undergarments, or cords.

The bag’s layout is intuitive and no-fuss. It’s also expandable too – opening the expansion zipper increases its capacity by 1 inch of depth. This increases the 25-inch model’s capacity from 78L to 84L. I found this especially useful returning from a longer trip when I had more souvenirs and dirty laundry than expected.

There aren’t a ton of extra compartments or dividers but for me it’s a good balance for those who don’t like excess fluff but appreciate some structure.

Wheels & Maneuverability: Smooth Operators

The Clavel features 4 double spinner wheels that roll silently and smoothly on airport floors and urban streets. I was impressed by how little vibration I felt on cobblestone roads in Europe too. While they won’t be up to the most brutal environments they’re a cut above many other suitcases in this price range.

One detail I especially appreciate is the bag’s wide wheelbase which gives it a stable stance and stops it feeling like it might tip over when fully loaded.

Handle System & Carry Options: Thoughtfully Designed

The telescoping handle feels solid and adjusts to a few different heights. It also locks into place with a reassuring click and no wobble. There are also three molded carry handles – top, side and bottom – making it easy to lift the suitcase up from different angles.

Bonus Touch: There’s also a molded recess underneath the bag which gives you something to grip and lift it from horizontally. I found this especially handy when loading it into car trunks or conveyor belts.

Real-World Test: Europe Trip Battle-Tested

After over 10 flights, two ferry rides, a few bus rides, getting dragged across every type of pavement you can imagine, sat on in long lines, dropped on curbs and wheeled over puddles and gravel, this bag is in remarkably good shape. It has protected my gear, held its form and has yet to complain.

The wheels are still rolling like new, the handles are tight and the shell has resisted cracking, unlike some brittle polycarbonate suitcases I’ve used in the past.
