Best for
Travelers seeking a lightweight, expandable hardside checked suitcase with smooth handling and straightforward organization.
Avoid if
You prefer soft-sided luggage, bold colors, perfectly balanced carry handles or premium extras such as built-in tracking.
Exact model tested
Travelpro Maxlite Air V2 Hardside Expandable Checked Luggage, 25-inch medium checked size
Measured empty weight
9.4 lb.
Main advantage
Its low 9.4-pound weight makes it easier to stay within checked-baggage limits without sacrificing capacity or durability.
Main disadvantage
The top and side carry handles are positioned slightly off-centre, making the suitcase feel less balanced when lifted.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lightweight for a medium checked suitcase at 9.4 lb
  • Durable 100% polycarbonate shell
  • Very smooth eight-wheel spinner system
  • Two-height telescoping handle with comfortable grip
  • Two-inch expansion provides additional packing space
  • Two zippered divider panels keep both sides organized
  • Water-resistant ECOFAB lining made partly from recycled bottles
  • Integrated TSA-approved lock
  • Roomy enough for approximately five- to ten-day trips
  • Under the common 62-linear-inch checked-baggage limit

Cons

  • Top and side carry handles are not perfectly centred
  • Glossy shell can develop light surface scratches
  • Color options are relatively muted
  • No built-in luggage tracker or electronic features
  • No exterior quick-access pocket
  • Expanded dimensions may exceed some airlines’ standard checked-bag limits
  • The final expansion point is a practical caution rather than a documented test result. The listed dimensions total 58 linear inches before expansion, so opening the two-inch expansion section may take it to approximately 60 linear inches depending on how the manufacturer measures it.

If durability, lightweight, and sophisticated style are on your checked luggage checklist, consider the Travelpro Maxlite Air V2 for your next upgrade. Weighing in on the lighter end of the scale, this hardshell case is a slightly updated version of the Maxlite Air series. New features are packed into this wheeled wonder, but the design still lives up to the Travelpro reputation for creating reliable, understated luggage. I spent many miles testing this 25” checked luggage on both flights and road trips, and here’s my lowdown.

Spoiler alert: this travel gear features some top specs, including its surprisingly low weight.

Build & Materials

Packing under 10 lbs, at 9.4 lbs to be exact, the Maxlite Air V2 is on the featherweight side for 27.5” spinners. A 100% polycarbonate shell with a smooth glossy surface and modern wave-texture design provide rigidity, impact resistance, and flexibility. This case doesn’t crack, shatter, or show wear as easily as some budget hardcases; the wheels and corners easily handle what the airport carousels dish out. Sustainable, eco-friendly, and tough — the materials on this one have many pluses.

The interior features ECOFAB lining treated with a water-resistant H2O guard, made from about 15 recycled plastic bottles. If eco-friendly materials appeal to you, this is another win. The reinforced corner guards inside also prevent denting and should keep the case smooth through thick and thin.

“It’s super lightweight for its size, that’s probably the strongest feature. The shell can take the abuse.” — J. Young (Apr 2025)

Dimensions & Airline Compatibility

  • Max Dimensions (including wheels & handle): 27.5″ x 18.5″ x 12″ (under the 62 linear inch limit for most domestic airlines)
  • Interior Dimensions: 24.5″ x 16.25″ x 11″
  • Weight: 9.4 lbs

Though considered a medium checked suitcase, it offers generous capacity while remaining under the standard 62-linear-inch limit used by many airlines. The 2-inch expansion zipper (see below) on this Maxlite Air is a nice feature that packs a lot more than you might think. A 25” can easily hold enough for a 5–10 day trip.

Wheels & Handling

Travelpro’s 8-wheel spinner system with double wheels at each corner is a rolling dream. Smooth coasting with little rolling resistance whether over carpeted airport floors, tiles, concrete, or even curbs and escalator steps.

The PowerScope Lite Handle is fluid when extended and has two height stops to make it comfortable for shorter and taller travelers. The grip has a nice rubberized contour for a comfortable in-hand feel, even during long treks through terminals.

“The wheels are sooooooo smooth… the handle has two different heights, which is perfect for shorter travelers like me.” — Lynne (May 2025)

“Handle goes up enough for my tall self. Very little wobble, feels sturdy.” — J. Young

A nitpick: The carry handle at the top of the case and side carry handles are slightly off-center to each other. A more centered carry handle would distribute the weight more evenly when lifted by hand. I found some testers found it awkward to handle without using the rolling wheels.

Interior & Packing Experience

Insider shout-out: A must-have in my bag. Zip up the two zippered divider panels for a neater, more secure packing experience. Keep each half of the case more organized and prevent things from sliding or shifting as you move.

Features inside:

  • Accessory pocket: Holds smaller items like socks, underwear, or small electronics accessories.
  • Tie-down straps to compress clothing for less wrinkling and a snugger fit.

With the two-inch expansion zipper unzipped, this Maxlite Air fits more than you think. I stuffed mine with 6 days’ worth of clothes for a road trip, 2 pairs of shoes, toiletries and hair dryer, a jacket, jeans, and still had room to spare for souvenirs. Interior is clean, efficient, and nothing is overly-engineered.

“The zippers are smooth, the compartments work well… it doesn’t feel like wasted space like some other cases.” — Verified Review

Security & Durability

Travelpro included a non-numbered integrated TSA lock, which is nothing fancy, but it’s useful for travelers who need peace of mind when checking or frequent flyers who’ve lost too many locks in their lifetime. What’s more, this piece took abuse in a big way, from rolling down stairs and carousels, to being tossed in a trunk, even being dropped.

The shell has some light scratches but nothing that doesn’t buff out with a microfiber cloth. Hard plastic corners and wheels, and the telescoping handle held strong. For a hardshell case, I was impressed with the durability of this Maxlite.

“I tossed it around pretty hard and it held up like a champ. The color hides scratches well too.” — J. Young

“Zipper pulls are sturdy, the lock feels solid, and everything still works like new after two trips.” — Verified Buyer

Style & Color Options

Travelpro offers several classic, modern colors: Slate Green, Teal, Onyx Black, Platinum Gray. Appearance is fairly high-end, but not super flashy. A few of the testers had hoped for a brighter teal or more eye-catching shade but were pleased with the sophisticated, mature color scheme Travelpro chose.

“I expected a brighter teal, but it’s a darker blue than I would have wanted. Still very classy though.” — Lynne

Travelpro has slightly muted but elegant finishes in matte and glossy. Those who like the Maxlite Air will likely love the subtle wavy pattern on the hardshell too. It’s neither a screaming brand-name case nor a generic AmazonBasics find.

Not Ideal For…

While the Maxlite Air V2 checks most boxes for hardshell wheels, here are a few areas where it’s not ideal:

  • Travelers who regularly need high-speed exterior laptop pockets (business travelers, fliers)
  • Soft-side lovers who prefer flexible materials for bulky packing or tight storage
  • Color-first travelers who want flashier, standout luggage colors
  • USB-charging-first buyers who prefer this bag to power small electronics on the road

For what it’s worth, while this case is built to last and should provide years of service, it doesn’t have some of the expensive bells and whistles that other, more costly models have, like built-in USB charging ports or luggage trackers.

Final verdict & where to buy

Travelpro's Maxlite Air V2 checked bag scores points for being lightweight, easy to roll and well-designed inside. It's missing some conveniences found on higher-end bags and the carry handle could be in a better location. However, it's made of rugged polycarbonate, can be expanded for extra packing space and rolls on sturdy spinner wheels. Overall, the Maxlite Air V2 is a solid choice for frequent casual travelers.
