Jeep JH004C Hardside Expandable Luggage Review

If you’re always wanted luggage as tough as your Jeep, the Jeep JH004C Hardside Expandable Luggage may be just what you’ve been looking for. After recently acquiring this off-road-inspired rolling carry-on, I checked it all over the map: from airport to backroads and beyond. Read on for details on the design, durability, capacity, wheels, and more of this Jeep-branded travel case.

Build & Materials

The Jeep JH004C is not a typical carry-on piece of luggage, and it knows it. Crafted from an ABS/PC blend resin injection-molded to form, this wheeled travel case is rock-solid from the outside. Even after dragging the JH004C on cracked sidewalks, gravel driveways, and dusty back roads, I never worried about scratching the pressure-resistant shell. This is some serious vault-like construction that Jeep lovers will appreciate.

For those of us that aren’t regularly shipping boulders across town, the rugged styling is also quite understated for what is basically a molded piece of ABS. The embossed Jeep logo on the front is not just decoration – it has great impact and helps to give the bag some character. While certainly on the beefier side, the bag doesn’t seem too heavy or top-heavy to handle despite the solid exterior. While I don’t suggest tossing it off a bridge or cliff, the JH004C is easy enough to pull, push, or lift when full.

Interior & Packing

Inside, the Jeep JH004C is smartly designed for packing. The main packing compartment is separated in two, with a zippered mesh divider on one side and a webbed tie-down strap with flat pocket on the other side. The pockets were especially nice for keeping my passports, chargers, and paper money stored while giving me better accessibility to these essentials.

The mesh pocket worked great at separating dirty travel shoes from clean clothes, while the open half was flexible for stuffing dirty clothes or items I needed access to more frequently. The JH004C is also expandable, using a zippered gusset for a few extra cubic inches of luggage capacity. In practical terms, that ended up meaning I had just enough space on my most recent weekend trip to store a pair of hiking boots, a complete change of outdoor apparel, and an extra set of clothes without feeling stuffed.

Wheels, Handle & Handling

When it comes to actual terrain performance, the dual traction wheels are the highlight of the Jeep JH004C. Unlike most spinner style luggage, these dual wheels appear to be made of more rubberized material and are clearly designed to grip better over softer, uneven, or unpaved surfaces like gravel, dirt, or rocky ground. While I didn’t test the bag in environments too off-road, I can say the wheels do a great job of flexing over lumpy sidewalks, irregular paving stones, and other slightly more rugged surfaces you don’t typically find in airports. Wheels were also sturdy enough that I didn’t worry about one popping off or getting damaged en route. Having said that, it is still a suitcase, not a 4×4–this bag will not float over muck, deep sand, or snow like an off-road Jeep Wrangler.

The telescopic handle works well too, with a nice solid click and no wobble or sagging under pressure. Twin expedition handles are available on the top and on one side, and these are also well-padded and comfortable to grip, including the bottom grip I appreciated to help me lift the case up onto my SUV.

Zippers & Security

The zippers on the JH004C are also interlocking and quite thick, with a solid feel in the hand. These are not universal TSA combination lock-compatible but rather require a separate TSA combination lock (not included with the JH004C). Zipper pulls are large, smooth, and easy to use even with gloves. The small negative here is that the zipper tracks can be prone to getting a little stiff if the grooves collect dirt or dust, so it’s something to keep in mind if you are going to be traveling on dusty roads.

Style & Colors

Colors offered for the Jeep JH004C include Peacoat Navy, Black, and Beige. Personally, I think the styling is great, not overly pretentious or trendy, with the bright Jeep colors set off nicely by these more neutral options. The colors available on the Jeep-branded bags are also a little more unique than typical luggage, so it may be easier to spot on baggage claim or in an airport thanks to its less-common color schemes.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Durable ABS/PC material with injection-molded case shell
  • Excellent dual traction wheels for off-road environments
  • Expandable storage
  • Easy to spot with Jeep embossed logo
  • Highly functional interior organization

Cons:

  • Zippers can get stiff if dusty
  • Lock not included
  • Not the best choice for overpackers due to fixed shell

Verdict

The Jeep JH004C Hardside Expandable Luggage is a great option for travelers who want something that is as rugged and reliable as the brand it’s sporting. It’s not the fanciest bag on the market and it’s not loaded with all the techy bells and whistles, but that’s just Jeep. The bag is stylish, rugged, and unique – perfect for Jeepers who want a piece of their off-road style to go along with them on road trips and air travel.
